The Kokomo Rescue Mission project expanded and modernized the facility to better serve the community. The two-stage construction began with a two-story addition that doubled the building’s size, followed by renovations to the existing structure. Updates included resizing offices, improving restrooms, and significantly expanding the kitchen to enhance meal service operations.
Because kitchen equipment choices directly impacted plumbing, electrical, and exhaust design, the team developed an “archetype” kitchen based on similar projects to maintain the schedule. This proactive approach allowed only minimal adjustments once final equipment selections were made. The result is a thoughtfully designed facility built for long-term functionality and community impact.
An interesting piece of technology we used was variable air volume (VAV) boxes. In order to give greater control to the HVAC systems across a diverse collection of space types, we split the addition side into 24 separate zones. Each zone was
conditioned by its own VAV box, each of which was controlled by its own thermostat. This enabled the temperature control of the building to be far more customized to each zone than a traditional HVAC system would have been capable of.
I was able to work around the timeline difficulties of having to wait for the kitchen equipment selections. Most of all, I was honored to have the opportunity to contribute to the design of a building that will be of great benefit to its community.”
